Engaged Learning Project
Reflection:
The Engaged Learning Project was created for ITEC 7400: 21st Century Teaching and Learning. In designing this project I was required to create an authentic and meaningful learning experience which included high level of technology integration and incorporated the indicators of engaged learning. My project my 7th grade Social Studies lesson involves the students researching the various groups relating to the Israeli- Palestine Conflict and have an understanding of their assigned groups’ point of view in regards to the conflict.
During this project, the students used a variety of digital tools and developed an authentic learning tools for their school and globally. The project reflects my ability to model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to engage students in an authentic learning environment. I developed a Weebly web site with all of the information related to the project. This Weebly page will include subpages which the students will create for each of the parties involved with background information and their viewpoint on the conflict. The students researched their assigned group viewpoint and position in regards to the Israeli - Palestine Conflict. The class participate in a debate (from their assigned groups viewpoint) to work through a resolution to the conflict. After completing the debate and coming to a resolution to the conflict, the group will include the resolution on their Weebly page. The group will also create a video to outline their resolution to the Palestine/Israeli Conflict. These videos will be published publically and sent to the United Nations Foundations as well as other students around the world.
This artifact is reflective of the students, students taking part in authentic real world learning experience, in working through a present world issues through various viewpoints.
In working through the development and facilitating of this lesson, I learned to make adjustments in regards to which digital tools to use and estimation of time it would take to complete the task. Since this lessons required higher order thinking skills, some students struggled with understanding viewpoints. In the future, I’ll work to differentiate the lessons to different levels of learners.
This lesson impacts student learning in project because students are working through a world real issue and work through to resolution themselves just like world leaders. This lesson impacted student learning by creating an authentic, meaningful experience in which students participated in self-guided research and is reflective in their understanding of the material in testing. School improvement is impacted as students are highly engage in the learning and their learning is enhanced. As more and more authentic learning and higher order thinking experiences are developed teachers are seeing the impact on student engagement and achievement and are asking assistance in design these types of learning environments.
