The artifact I choose to represent my master of this standard is a professional development technology workshop and website I created for ITEC 7460. The purpose of the technology workshop was to provide teachers the benefits of creating their own Webquest and the use of social media in the classroom. The artifact includes a website designed to house information shared in the workshop and to provide tools and resources for ongoing use. The workshop was designed so that the teachers would take on the role of the students and work through a technology-centered activity, and materials from the workshop are housed on the website for teacher use. My contribution was an analysis of teacher needs, research on use of social media in the classroom and the search for resources, designing the workshop to include handouts, learning activities and an evaluation of the workshop.
In advance of preparing for the workshop, I sent a survey out to the staff at the school gauging their familiarity on using and creating Webquests and social media in their classrooms. The workshop discussed the topic of the use of Symbaloo and Weebly to create interactive webquest in the classroom and the use of social media tools of Twitter and Instagram.
I wanted to engage the teachers in new ideas and tools in the classroom. The results from this assessment allowed me to develop and implement a technology-based professional learning plan that met the needs of the teachers. The plan was also aligned to the ISTE Standards for Teachers in that I helped them design and develop digital age learning experiences, modeled digital age work, and helped my peers engage in professional growth and learning. The artifacts demonstrate my ability develop and implement technology-based professional learning. The ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement and Evaluate) methodology was used for the development of the workshop.
To improve the quality of this artifact there are some things I would do differently. I would extend the workshop beyond an hour, if possible, to allow more practice time. I would also allow more time for follow-up and collaboration with the teachers as they implemented the concepts covered in the staff development sessions. I also would promote and solicit greater participation in the professional learning and in the use of the online aspect of the workshop for blended learning.
The work that went into completing this artifact made the largest impact in faculty development. The knowledge and skill I gained in the area of creating and implementing professional learning will equip me to successfully do more in the future and expand my opportunities. School staff attending this training will gain knowledge and skill in the use of digital tools and resources to increase student learning and engage them in the process. This can be assessed through classrooms observations and lesson plans. Student learning will be impacted by teachers designing more engaging and relevant learning environments.
