4.2 Safe, Healthy, Legal & Ethical Use

Candidates model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. (PSC 4.2/ISTE 5b)

Artifacts:
Internet Safety Blog Post

Copyright Presentation

Reflection:

These two artifacts reflect my ability to model and facilitate learning in a safe, healthy environment and understanding the legal and ethical uses of digital resources. The Copyright Presentation was a professional development presentation I created as part of ITEC 7445: Multimedia and Web Design in Education class. The project was a PowerPoint presentation I created and presented to the faculty at my school in the proper use of multi-media and internet resources in the classroom.  The Internet Safety blog was written during my ITEC 7430: Internet Tools in the classroom.  The blog reflects the importance modeling and providing safe and healthy environment for students to learn and the students understanding of safe uses of the internet.

This Copyright presentation address my ability to model and facilitate legal and ethical use of digital information and technologies in education.  While creating this presentation, I had to review the copyright guidelines in regards to use of in educational purposes. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misuse of digital media in the classroom and teachers not having a clear understanding how and when it is okay to use movies and television shows in the classroom. As part of the presentation, I developed scenarios for the participants to review and gauge their understanding their proper use in their classrooms.  This presentation will an artifact, I will able to use over the years as I develop my career as a technology educator and also be updated as laws in fair use and copyright change over the course of time.  As my student work more and more with digital media in their own project, this presentation could be given to students to model to them the proper use of digital information in their own course work.

My Internet Safety blog posting discuses curriculum which teachers can be use in the classroom and parents at home for to model safe use of the internet.  This blog posted clearly shows how I model and facilitate a safe and healthy learning environment in using the internet in the classroom. The blog mentions my use of Edmodo, which is an online secure platform used for education only. Along with the importance of digital citizenship, through the use of Common Sense Media curriculum, I lead students through digital citizenship lessons and also have my students sign a Digital Citizenship pledge from Common Sense Media.

As the use of technology and digital media continues to grow in classrooms and learning, I will continue to foster the purpose of proper digital citizenship by students and teachers.  I will continue to improve the quality of both of these artifacts. The copyright presentation, I would like to modify to be used with students.  I have already plan to improve the Internet Safety blog by creating lessons which address Internet Safety which are being used on a weekly basis by the teachers and students at my school.

The impact of this two artifacts on student improvement, faculty development and student learning can be measured through faculties and student’s understanding the proper use of digital information and technologies.  With implementation for digital citizenship every week in the school, every student and teacher understanding of these uses are further enforced and reflects the support of school administration.  Teacher have a clearer understanding of proper copyright regulations while developing instruction.
