3.6 Selecting and Evaluating Digital Tools & Resources
Candidates collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure. (PSC 3.6/ISTE 3f)
Reflection:
The artifact I selected to show I have met this standard is the Evaluating Emerging Technologies Project from ITEC 7445. For this assignment, we were to evaluate an emerging technology and create a presentation that could be shared with the leadership team of our school. This presentation could be used to show why this emerging technology would be beneficial for our specific school environment. The tool I choose to evaluate was Edmodo. This artifact demonstrates my ability to collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources. Through this presentation and workshops, I was able to build capacity in our school in the use of this online platform.
This presentation was given to my school’s Guiding Coalition. The purpose to show how this platform needs of the school technology vision: Innovative and engaging standards based instruction and 21st century technology. While the Edmodo tool had been in place since 2012, when I gave this presentation in Fall of 2013, many teachers at my school had not implementation in the classroom. In researching the tool, I was able to determine Edmodo meet several of our school objectives; building an authentic and engaging learning environment which meets the needs of diverse learners through the use of innovative technology and building safe collaborative learning environments to increase problem solving skills and higher critical learning.
The artifact explains how the digital tool and the resources that accompany it meet the criteria for accuracy. Edmodo meet our school’s needs to have a online platform which would allow a collaborative learning to happen in a safe environment. The artifact explains how the digital tool and the resources that accompany it meet the criteria for suitability. Edmodo through innovative instruction with the capabilities of, allows differentiation instruction, access to learning applications embedded, collaborative learning environments and Communication between home and school community. The artifact explains how the digital tool and the resources that accompany it meet the criteria for compatibility. Edmodo is a web and app based tool and is compatible on any platform. The research determined that there would be no issue with compatibility with our school’s network because the devices interface directly with our iPad devices and laptops which are already connected to the school’s network. Since this is a web based tool, the school district’s IT department would not need to install any software or keep it up to date.
In completing this artifact, I have learned there will always be those who are not willing to change with process, procedure and new ideas. In the future, I would include those who I think maybe resisters to work with me in researching new tools and capabilities. This is manner, I could further build the capacity of our school’s technology usage.
This artifact impacts our school by introducing a new tool for teaching and learning. As our school and district shift to more personalize learning model, the resource presented could have an impact on student learning by enabling students to explore content independently and collaborate to use the information learned. This resource assists faculty what a tool to present information, collaborate and communication in a safe and engaging environment with their students. The impact of this artifact will be assessed by administration and faculty reaction to the platform presented. We will further assess the impact by evaluating the increase in the use of the tool in regards to teaching and learning in our school.
